Microsoft this week snapped up Apptimum Inc., a small company that specializes in software that automatically transfers customers' applications to new computers.

Details about the deal were not disclosed.

The first public release of a Microsoft product based on the Apptimum technology will be an optional download for Windows Vista customers, Microsoft said. No other details about the product were released.

Apptimum makes Migrate DT and Migrate CI. Migrate DT is a tool that helps automate the process of upgrading to new hardware. The software helps migrate an end user's entire computing state. Migrate CI is used to package applications that are deployed onto Citrix Systems Inc.'s Presentation Server.
