QUESTION POSED ON: 01 September 2006
My XP based PC has been progressively slowing down over the past couple of weeks. Recently it has been going to the dreaded "blue screen" with the error message stating "Kernel_Data_Error". I ran the chkdsk/f utility and received an error message telling me that "Primary Master Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad. WARNING: Immediately back-up your data & replace your HDD. A failure may be imminent." I purchased a new HDD. What is the easiest way to transfer the OS, settings and files from the old HDD (which is still accessible) to the new HDD? Is there a utility program that will mirror the old disk to the new disk?

EXPERT RESPONSE
Yes – try Acronis –they have several tools that can help, especially their TrueImage product that I've used successfully for this before. You could also manually copy your files as well.

There's an old saying that goes something like this: "When he makes a mistake, the wise carpenter blames himself, but the unwise carpenter blames his tools." All issues of blame aside, it's impossible for any craftsperson to practice a craft without the right tools. Fill your toolbox with some of these recommended security tools.
